The Indie Toolbox

For every (famous) author who can pen a best selling book in 9 months and make it look easy there are 1000 Indie authors who work hard. Extremely hard. Some sit and stare at the screen until their eyes blur before getting a word down. Others write tens of thousands of words only to scrap every one of them and begin again. There are those who are eager, even desperate, for advice, tips, tricks, and the magic it takes to get the thoughts in their head onto the page.

With the exception of a ghostwriter, there is nothing that will write your book for you, but there is help that might ease the pain. Writing is hard. Marketing is harder yet. I created this page to offer help. Whether it be a writing reference book, a piece of software, or an outstanding blog with a plethora of useful information, each recommendation has been handpicked by me.

If you have any suggestions of something you’d like to know more about, let me know and I will check it out and tell you (the truth) about it.

To get started, here are a few books by Angela Ackerman and Becca Puglisi that I have found indispensable. It’s not like I don’t know the sights, sounds, smells, etc. of the country. Or how it feels to lose someone I love. Or how I would react to certain emotional stimuli. I can manuver my way through urban identifiers and can distinguish between positive and negative behaviors. But, I cannot do it as well, or as quickly, as I can with the help of these books. Rather than waiting for the sights and smells of your last ride through the country to come to you, you can find them all in one place using The Rural Setting Thesaurus. If you find yourself using the same descriptors over and over when your character is nervous, The Emotional Thesaurus will give you many you probably never thought of.

I have the whole set and use them often. If I had to get rid of my reference books one at a time, these would be some of the last to go. Worth their weight in gold! Take advantage of the “Look Inside” feature on Amazon and I’m sure you’ll agree. Each is available in both digital and paperback. Click on a book for a preview of what’s inside….
